NCC 2016 requires slip resistance ratings for new construction of ramps. The pendulum or ramp rating testing method is used to determine the grip on incline surfaces. The the ramp surfaces must pass both WET and DRY slip resistance requirements to comply with the construction code.

Is the surface unlikely to become wet?
The area must be surveyed for occasional water such as water from umbrellas, beverage spills etc. Once the surface has been assessed the the risk will determine the correct solution to be employed. Lift lobbies and corridors are not generally exposed to water contamination and are therefore often tested using a dry Floor Friction Tester .
HOW IS SLIP RESISTANCE MEASURED?
- There are five different approved methods of measuring slip resistance
- Wet Pendulum
- Wet Pendulum and Dry Floor Friction
- Dry Floor Friction
- Wet/Barefoot Ramp
- Oil-wet Ramp
Each type of test is specific to the type of installation location and the exposure to the elements.
There is no direct correlation between the results obtained from each method. More slip resistant surfaces should obtain higher ratings across all methods used.
